William Ellis was the ninth child of Susannah Thorpe & Humphrey Ellis born July-September 1855 at Hucknall Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.
William was living with his parents & sisters at Tibshelf in 1861.
By the time of the 1871 census William was the only child still at home & was employed as a coal miner at the age of 15. He & his parents were still living at Tibshelf.
William married Elizabeth Smith on April 16th 1876, at Blackwell. Witnesses at the wedding were William’s brother-in-law, George Riley, and Jane Smith. Elizabeth was born c1858 at Greenhill Lane, Derbyshire, the daughter of Ann & Joseph Smith, a coal miner.
In 1881 William & Elizabeth were living at Mount Pleasant, Blackwell, Derbyshire & William was a coal miner. They had a 4 year old daughter Elizabeth Ann.
Elizabeth gave birth to at least four more children, Hephzibah, Mary Jane, Sarah Ann & Agnes, before she died in 1887, aged 29. Elizabeth died at Stonebroom & was buried on June 7th at Tibshelf. It is possible that she died after giving birth to a son as there is a burial for Frederick Ellis aged 1 month on July 10th, 1887 at Tibshelf.
